Maria Mother of the Church and San Barnaba

The parish of Maria Madre della Chiesa was founded in 1967. It lies in the southern part of the Gratosoglio district. At first, diocesan priests looked after the parish and then it was entrusted to the Barnabites. The parish returned to diocesan clergy in 2011, when it became part of the Gratosoglio Pastoral Community with the parish of San Barnaba. The parish of Maria Madre della Chiesa is one of the few meeting points for the life of the Gratosoglio district. Through its oratory, it offers a series of initiatives and activities not only markedly religious but also in support of children and their families, with specific attention for those who are at risk of social exclusion. In detail, there is an after-school club for primary school children, an Italian course for foreign mothers, and family time for mothers or grandmothers in the area and children from 0-36 months.

There are also recreational theatrical and artistic workshops for teenagers, sports in partnership with the Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica La Fenice, set up within the parish, summer entertainment, education for peace and integration with the initiative Education for Peace Campus, courses on law-related education in co-operation with LIBERA (an Italian association promoting outreach activities against organised crime). Since 2017, the parish has promoted and managed the collection network around the work group defined ‘Tavolo Sociale per Gratosoglio’ (Social Workgroup for Gratosoglio) for the redevelopment of the district and was the area contact for the creation of the Evento Frida on 10-13 May 2018 in the 2018 edition of Milano Food-City.

Piccolo Principe Association

The Associazione Piccolo Principe was set up on 2 April 2008 by a group of professionals who wanted to share growth and training experiences with young people. We work with a staff of educators, psychologists and pedagogues. We create and offer projects to prevent and reduce social exclusion in and out of school hours. The children and their families are the prime references for us and define all our projects. The work carried out in recent years has been consolidated particularly in Zone 5, Milan, and this has enabled us to construct a network of co-operation with many local services - we have worked in the local social workgroup (since it was set up), specifically in the sub-group on children, we have implemented projects with other bodies on the same committee, and we work with the social and therapeutic services. We work and co-operate with private associations of great professionalism and skill in Milan. We implement projects both in- and out-of-school. We have had after-school services for children and young people aged 8-15 since our foundation, we provide outreach projects in primary and middle schools, listening corners for teachers and families, and support for parenting. For several years, we have been working in schools, on an annual basis, creating educational projects with the outreach work in class, also involving learning experiences in the mountains as a tool for personal growth and training. Since 2013, we have intensified our co-operation with the parish of Maria Madre della Chiesa where we use its rooms for some of our projects. Since 2018, as a result of the synergy and sharing of purposes and procedures, the parish has entrusted us with the selection, care and economic management of staff for its more specialised educational projects such as the International Peace Campus (www.campusdellapace.altervista.org or www.peacefulact.org). Since September 2019, our Association has managed the space Panchine culturali sulla Piazza (Cultural Benches in the Square) amongst the high-rise towers, acting as a hub for almost all the associations in the district which have contributed to the cultural offering offered in it. The Associazione Piccolo Principe manages the Progetto Scholé. In 2020, this was financed by the Impresa Sociale Con i Bambini (Social Enterprise with Children) with more than Euro 900,000 in four years. This association was set up to create an educational network with the partners in the area including the primary and secondary schools, sports associations and other public and private bodies.
